On Tuesday morning, Manchester United announced that David Moyes has been sacked as the manager of the club.
The Scot was relieved of his duties after a dismal season, which has seen the reigning stuck in 7th place in the Premier League, 13 points off the top of the table. The Glazer family were pushed to make the decision, after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Moyes’ former club Everton – their 11th league loss of the season.
According to reports, the decision to get rid of Moyes, was first mooted at a recent board meeting, but a financial motive was behind the delay to axe the 50-year-old. After the loss at Goodison Park, it became mathematically impossible for United to finish in the top four, which means the Red Devils will not play Champions League football for the first time in 18 years.
One of the clauses of the contract Moyes signed, means that the Old Trafford outfit will only give him a one-year pay-off, rather than honour the full four years left on the deal.
Ryan Giggs is expected to be named as interim manager, while United are considering Jurgen Klopp, Louis van Gaal and Diego Simeone as possible permanent replacements.
