A Nigerian man, whose identity has been withheld, has stirred up his community and others by declaring his intention to wed his mother-in-law, who is widowed.
The 46-year-old man lost his wife when she was 34 years old, leaving behind three kids: two boys and a girl.
He has made the proposal to his late wife’s mother, a 57-year-old widow, two years after the tragic loss.
The controversial request has sparked a heated debate among family members and wider society. The man claims that he does not wish to have more children and is primarily motivated by a concern for his existing family’s well-being. He argues that by marrying his mother-in-law, he can ensure his children’s continued care and protection, avoiding the potential mistreatment they might face from an outsider.
He wrote;
“A man (name withheld) lost his wife after they had had three children (two boys and a girl). His wife died at 34 years old. Two years after, he wants to marry his mother-in-law who is 57 years old and a widow. He is 46 years old. He says he does not need more children nor want to marry an outsider who may isolate and maltreat his children. Some members of their two wider families support the idea while many are against it. Is this right?”
