Former president of Nigeria Shehu Shagari is dead.
His death was announced by Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state, where Shagari is from.
“I regret to Announce the death of former President Shehu Shagari who just passed away at National Hospital Abuja. May his Soul Rest in Peace,” Tambuwal tweeted.

His grandson Bello Shagari also tweeted about his death, saying he passed at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness.
“I regret announcing the death of my grandfather, H.E Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who died right now after brief illness at the National hospital, Abuja,” he wrote.

Shagari passed at age 93 and was Nigeria’s president between 1979 to 1983.
