Jose Mourinho said he was “happy” Arsenal fans could finally celebrate beating one of his sides as the Gunners kept alive their top-four hopes with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United.
The win was Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger‘s first in 16 competitive meetings with United boss Mourinho.
A deflected Granit Xhaka strike and a Danny Welbeck header gave Arsenal a 2-0 victory over United that kept their top-four hopes alive, although Mourinho fielded a much weakened squad with the Europa League in mind.
The victory ended Wenger’s 15-game hoodoo against Mourino, but the Portuguese tactician remains bullish as ever, saying it’s little consolation after long years of suffering at his hands, Telegraph writes.
“I’m happy for them. It’s the first time I leave and they’re happy,” Mou stated.
“I leave Highbury, they were crying. I leave the Emirates and they were crying, walking the streets with heads low. Today they leave with their scarves.
“It’s a big club. You think I enjoy a big club like Arsenal not winning trophies? I don’t enjoy it. But today I tried to win.”
Mourinho hailed Wenger as a “big manager”, but says he still can’t get used to the Frenchman’s antics on the touchline.
“I really don’t care about it today. No problems. We shook hands and during the game I don’t like what I never like. He puts too much pressure on the fourth official every time.”
Mourinho also played down his side’s chances of finishing in the top four, saying their rivals who play a game a week have an advantage on them.
“It’s impossible,” said Mourinho. “For two reasons. I don’t think the others playing one match a week are going to lose. And because we go with everything on Thursday and cannot go with everything at Tottenham.
“I don’t think we have any chance of the top four. We have to chase the Champions League by trying to win the Europa League.”
